Gorgeous Southern Rockhopper on Sea Lion Island. Happy Penguin Awareness Day! 🐧🐧🐧

  • Peaceful moments observing the circle of life 🌏

January is a really interesting time to see a King Penguin colony, because there's so much going on. Courtship, incubating eggs, chicks creching, and like you see behind me, some are in the process of moulting into their adult plumage (their version of an awkward teenager phase). Blessed to see all of these wonderful natural behaviours in abundance.
  • King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus)

I always thought this first photo made them look quite suspicious, like they were planning something 😂

This time last year we'd just touched down in South Georgia for the first time, where I spotted my first King Penguin.

Such a magical island ❤️

Wait till the end for a big splash!

Thankfully I was over my sea sickness by this point but this moment really got my heart racing 😰😂

All footage recorded was part of an expedition led by Dr. Jane Younger, and principally funded by the Field Museum. Significant planning input was also given by Dr. Gemma Clucas, Rachael Herman, and Dr. Sushma Reddy. We are grateful to the governments of the Falkland Islands and the South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands governments for approving work within their jurisdictions. Research was permitted by: the British Polar Research Office, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands government and the Falkland Islands government. Funding for this expedition came primarily from The Field Museum (Chicago) , with additional funding from National Geographic, University of Bath, Cornell University, and other organisations. We greatly appreciate gear loans from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Taking a little break from my research to do a 3 month placement with @ri_science in London, so excited to see where it takes me!

I'm going to be involved in the planning and running of interactive science workshops with children which is going to be so much fun and very different from my normal day job, wish me luck! ❤️

  • Sheathbills (family Chiondidae) are made up of only 2 species, this one is the "pale-faced" species (Chionis albus). Their behaviour reminded me of other birds all rolled into a sort of chicken/pigeon/seagull hybrid. They're pretty tame, inquisitive, and a bit rough around the edges. As soon as one of them nipped me on the bum, I knew it was love ❤️😅

Swipe to see a video of their behaviour, and a King penguin trying its best to protect me from them...

Some fun facts:
- They are the only Antarctic birds without webbed feet
- They are true land natives of Antarctica, no swimming for these guys so they tend to stick around here or in South America when it gets too cold
- They eat nearly anything e.g. poop, regurgitated food, afterbirth from other animals and I even saw one dive and snatch up a rotten penguin egg once, it was unbelievably gross 🤢
- During courtship, they are known perform a bowing ceremony 👰

Hope you like them!
